Welcome to Week 3 of our Power Rankings. This week is a lot more stable than other weeks. Aside from a couple of exceptions, for the most part teams have moved up or down by not too many spots. Now that the four major leagues have started, it will bring more stability to our rankings in return. Here is a refresher on what our criteria is:

1. Current placement in standings – Simply put, this reflects what position the team is in their own local league. It doesn’t take into account anything else other than their current placement in the standings.

2. Projected trajectory – This criteria is determined by what is the expected trajectory of a team. For example, G2 had a rough Week 1 in the 2020 Summer Split. But we take into account the fact that G2 is a powerhouse and one of the two most dominant teams in LEC history. With that in mind we expect them to shape up and get better throughout the split.

3. Expectations vs Results – This is similar to the projected trajectory except it takes it and compares it to what the reality is right now. If a team is expected to shape up but is struggling at the moment, we take that into account. Think of this criteria as a hybrid between the first two criteria we listed above!

4. Weekly individual performance for the players – Last but not least, this criteria is determined by how well the players are performing individually on the team. Simple as that!

Here are the rankings:

2. LGD Gaming

3. DragonX (+1)

Top 5

Our Top 5 remain the same with one minor change. Due to DragonX’s successful Week 2 and being the only team still undefeated in the LCK, we decided it’s fair to put them one spot higher this week. Victory Five on the other hand, despite putting up a very good fight, lost to reigning Worlds champions FunPlus Phoenix. We won’t put too much stock into this loss. FPX is still a good team and V5 didn’t simply lose and get rolled over. They lost a competitive series and made FPX work for their win. V5 still remains a team with overall very low expectations that is performing incredibly this split despite their roster not being made of any star players.

TES remains the clear best team while LGD continues to impress with how they have turned around their fortunes ever since the 2015 LGD fiasco at Worlds. MAD Lions also retain their spot despite a lot of teams around them closing in. With their victory over Rogue, they have solidified themselves as a top team in the world for the time being at least!

Upper Half

So there is one big change here. Team WE has taken Afreeca Freecs’ spot in the Upper Half. Even last split WE started off slow but ended up being a very decent team. This time around they are starting their split strong and continue to rack up wins. Afreeca on the other hand lost a series to a T1 team that is still finding their groove, as well as taking a decisive loss to league leaders DragonX. Although they are still a good team, this unfortunately brings them down by quite a lot of spots. Still, we are confident they can find their way back up.

Cloud9 and DAMWON Gaming have climbed up the rankings after continuing to have strong showings in their respective leagues. Cloud9 still remains a mystery as they play in an overall weaker region, but they make their games look easy against any opponent that they face. It will be hard for us to put them in the Top 5 but if they continue to turn in weekly 2-0 results, they will eventually crack the Top 5 just off of insane dominance alone.

Lower Half

A new challenger has entered the fray! Team Dynamics enters our Power Rankings this week after another strong showing and a 3-1 start to their LCK debut. They were barely able to crack the Lower Half however as they’ve had a very light schedule compared to other teams. Once they start playing against the top teams the real test will begin. Will they crack and exit our rankings relatively fast? Or will they continue to rack up wins and climb up? Time will tell! Nevertheless we feel it’s fair to finally include them here as not too many people would have predicted they would start their split 3-1.

With their win against V5, FunPlus Phoenix is right on the doorstep of the Upper Half. Another strong week and they will head there for sure. But for now they are the leaders of the Lower Half and continue to improve on their play despite a rocky start to their split. T1 and Gen.G have also moved up a good amount in the rankings after better showings in Week 2. We knew that these teams would find their footing fast as they are two of the premier orgs in the LCK. Despite their win against Fnatic, G2 lost to SK Gaming. Going 1-1 and your players still being very inconsistent is just about enough for us to keep you in your spot.

Again, we want to stress that we expect G2 to climb up these standings for sure! Perkz will be taking a break from competitive play for a mental reset and once he comes back, we expect G2 to start their winning ways once more. Another noticeable change you may spot is that Fnatic has exited our Power Rankings for this week. After an 0-2 Week 3, Fnatic is currently on a 4 game losing streak. With Team Dynamics entering the rankings and other teams slowly climbing up, Fnatic had to exit for this week. Still, don’t be upset Fnatic fans! We are sure they will find their way back up fast if they can fix the issues that have been plaguing them. And if you are wondering why G2 gets to keep their spot while Fnatic doesn’t, it is simply the fact that expectations for Fnatic are slightly lower and some of their players have been performing really poorly recently.

Bottom 5

After a disappointing 1-1 where Origen lost to MAD Lions, they have lost their spot in the Lower Half and find themselves at the bottom for this week. We already discussed Afreeca Freecs but they also find themselves leading the Bottom 5. Invictus Gaming have started their ascension of the rankings and after better showings this week and more stable play from TheShy, we felt confident bumping them up some spots.

Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses took a small hit to their placement in the rankings after suffering one loss each. We do believe they are both decent teams but considering the lower quality of the LCS as a whole, the best we can give them for the time being is a spot in the Bottom 5. If the quality of games in the LCS increases or either of these teams can take a game off Cloud9, we would be more willing to bump them up. But for now, they need to keep giving in strong 2-0 showings or they risk losing their spot in these rankings altogether.
